Kuhio Beach Nourishment Project

The State of Hawaii DLNR is conducting an offshore small-scale (10,000 cubic yards) sand-pumping project at Waikiki Beach . 

The purpose of the project is to re-nourish Waikiki Beach and demonstrate the effects of offshore sand retrieval in Hawaii

for future beach restoration projects. The project is anticipated to last approximately 20 to 30 days.

UPDATE: January 5, 2007.
Dredging completed. Barge and pipeline system demobilized and settling basin is backfilled and graded. Final beach grooming and grading should be completed by Saturday January 6, 2007.

Pumping started on Saturday Dec 4. Dredged sediment is well-sorted medium sand characterized by a gray color, lack of discernable odor, and is likely to be stable on the beach. Exposure to air and sunlight, and mixing with ambient sand, is expected to eventually lighten the color. Staging area and settling basin expanded to accomodate higher pumping rates. Sand distribution started Dec 7 sand has been delivered to the Diamond Head end of the Kuhio Swim basin sand distribution will begin in the Ewa swim basin (Area 2) starting Friday Dec 22.
