October 2009

October 4-10 is designated as Fire Prevention Week. This year's theme is "STAY FIRE SMART! DON'T GET BURNED. This year's theme is focused on burn awareness and prevention, as well as keeping homes safe from the leading causes of home fires.

Here are a few tips offered by the National Fire Protection Association:

  1. Keep hot foods and liquids away from table and counter edges so they cannot be pulled or knocked over by small children.
  2. Be aware when using things that get hot such as curling irons, ovens, lamps, and heaters.
  3. Test the water before placing children or themselves in the tub.
  4. Treat a burn right away. Put it in cool water for 3-5 minutes. Cover with a clean, dry cloth.
  5. If the burn is bigger than your fist, or if you have any questions, get medical help right away.
  6. Do not leave a stove unattended. Keep things that can burn (potholders, towels, & paper towel) away from the stove.
